在SAT平行结构考题中，and是一个非常重要的参考符号。一个平行结构中最后一个平行成分的前面，一般都有个and以表明and后面的部分与前面的平行关系。比如看到and doing，则表示and doing前必至少还有个doing。看到and because从句，则前面必有另外一个because从句。

在普通文法里，which可以指代之前的整个句子（此时，which前必须要加逗号），但SAT不接受。

C、D和E中，not only的位置都是有问题的，C的not only并列的是动词wastes而不是从句；D的not only并列的是没划线的名词their children's time；E的not only并列的是表手段或方式的by itself。因此，都不能和but also＋that从句构成平行。

例：The square of x is equal to 9 times the square of y. If x is 1 more than 3 timesy, what is the value of x?
